Open post-doc position in observational & volcano seismology

Published on Monday June 24, 2024

The European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology (ECGS) is an Earth science research foundation supported by the government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The key missions of ECGS encompass fundamental research activities in solid earth sciences, with a particular focus on the disciplines of seismology and satellite geodesy (InSAR, GNSS), as well as seismological and geodetic observatory missions. ECGS operates the Luxembourg National Seismic Network (FDSN code LU), the Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics, as well as seismic and geodetic networks abroad in the frame of its research programmes, such as until recently in the Virunga Volcanic Province in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (KivuSNet, FDSN code KV). ECGS closely collaborates with the National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg through various projects and activities. The permanent team is composed of two seismologists, two geodesists, two engineers and an administrative assistant.
In the context of its project activities, ECGS invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of observational & volcano seismology.
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will consist in the processing and analysis of high-quality seismological datasets, with a particular focus on the Virunga Volcanic Province data acquired from 2013 to 2022. The planned work will involve the usage of local/regional tomographic imaging methods, ambient seismic noise processing as well as processing and interpretation of volcano-seismic signals. Besides these specific project duties, the successful candidate is encouraged to develop own research interests with the available datasets and contribute to shape the group’s seismological activity portfolio. The successful candidate will also contribute to the organisation of international meetings and/or training sessions/summer schools.
All candidates applying for this position should be motivated to work in an interdisciplinary and international framework.

Qualifications

We seek an outstanding individual holding a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, physics or a related field, with a strong scientific track record and mathematical background. Familiarity with state-of-the-art seismic signal processing techniques and broadband seismological instrumentation is indispensable. The successful candidate needs to be acquainted with seismological standards. Advanced programming skills in a commonly used programming language such as Python or Matlab are required for the position. Experience using the seismological acquisition and processing software package SeisComP is an asset. The candidate is expected to work independently and to collaborate on an international level, requiring initiative, organizational and communication skills. We expect the candidate to be fluent in spoken and written English. Fluency or a good level in French is an asset.

Terms of employment

The successful candidate will be offered a two-years full-time post-doc position. Work location will be Walferdange, Luxembourg. The position involves a competitive salary package.
